Senescence

The shortness of days, the bustle surrounding the pending holidays, and the palpable weight permeating all the waking hours are indicative of the senescence of a quickly dying year. An annual transition from what was to what can be.

As we live through this annual transition, each time through brings a personal awareness of the same cyclic effects upon our body. Aging is a gift for those lucky enough to experience it and provides increasing challenges to find ways to mitigate difficulties and make the process easier to endure and, dare I say, enjoy.

A significant element in finding enjoyment in the aging process is our ability to recognize the beauty in letting things go. Autumn is a visual reminder of this. Taking stock of our material belongings as we age and cutting the ties to the things no longer used or needed, downsizing our space, revising our leisure activities, all of these steps are something to be embraced.

Sloughing off our excess brings us an opportunity to recognize our growth, to redefine our space, our place and, not unlike a serpent shedding a skin, have another new beginning. As we close out this year, let’s look not back at what we are stepping away from, but instead focus attention forward on the undefined possibilities ahead of us.
